Amateur baseball roundup: Gau shuts out Parkston, Alexandria stays undefeated in Sunshine League play
PARKSTON -- Tyson Gau threw a one-hit shutout as Alexandria blanked Parkston, 3-0, in Sunshine League amateur baseball action on Sunday.
Gau mowed down 12 batters and issued zero walks in 109 pitches, while receiving just enough run support. Gau scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, while Cole Wenande smacked a two-run double in the fifth for the last runs of the game.
Peyton Smith and Chris Marek each had two hits. Matt Wilber and Jerrod Zens each recorded a hit.
Parkston starter Brady Nolz lasted six innings. He allowed five hits, three earned runs and struck out nine batters in 107 pitches.
Matt Malloy’s double in the fifth inning accounted for Parkston’s lone hit.
Alexandria (5-1, 4-0 Sunshine League) hosts Winner/Colome on Friday. Parkston (3-3, 1-1 Sunshine League) plays Corsica/Stickney on Thursday in Corsica.
Mount Vernon 13, Winner/Colome 3 (8 innings)
MOUNT VERNON -- Eric Giblin smacked two home runs, Tate Deinert went deep and Mount Vernon knocked off Winner/Colome in Sunshine League amateur baseball play on Sunday.
Giblin finished 3-for-5 and drove in five runs, including a two-run homer and a three-run shot. Deinert’s solo shot in the seventh inning put Mount Vernon ahead, 11-3. Deinert posted three hits for Mount Vernon, which produced two five-run innings to spark the victory.
Jay Thaler added two hits and two RBIs. Bradley Dean, Chase Hetland, Cameron Deinert, Deric Denning and Bryce Smart each recorded a hit.
Denning earned the win. He scattered four hits, gave up two earned runs and struck out four batters in five innings of relief.
For Winner/Colome, Derek Graesser cracked a lead-off home run as part of a two-hit day. Reed Harter also notched two hits. Dillon Lambley, Chandler Bakley and Lakin Neugebauer finished with one hit each.
Connor Hopkins took the loss. He scattered eight hits, allowed seven runs (five earned) and fanned 10 batters in five innings.
Mount Vernon (8-1, 2-1 Sunshine League) hosts Dimock/Emery on Thursday. Winner/Colome (4-1, 2-1 Sunshine League) plays at Alexandria on Friday.
Dimock/Emery 20, Corsica/Stickney 16
EMERY -- Dimock/Emery and Corsica/Stickney teed off on each other in a Sunshine League slugfest on Sunday.
Behind a seven-RBI day by Phil Johnson, the Raptors edged the Horned Frogs as the teams combined for 31 hits.
Johnson went 5-for-5, including a solo home run and a three-run blast in the seventh inning. Gene Kitchens belted a two-run homer for Dimock/Emery, which finished with 15 hits. Sam Pischke finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Drew Kitchens and Sam Michels also had two hits. Landon Sudbeck, Calvin Hegg and Tucker Kingsbury each had a hit.
Johnson picked up the win for Dimock/Emery. He struck out six batters, gave up 12 hits and 11 runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings.
For Corsica/Stickney, Blake Moke finished 3-for-6 and drove in six runs. Moke smoked a grand slam to highlight an 11-run, fifth inning for the Horned Frogs. Kris Menning and Logan Risse also finished with three hits. Gavin Zomer recorded two doubles and knocked in six runs. Bryce Plamp posted two hits, while Luke Bamberg posted a hit.
Moke took the loss. He allowed nine hits, nine earned runs and struck out three batters in three innings of relief. Starter Ross Kortan lasted three innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs and striking out two batters.
Dimock/Emery (3-6, 1-2 Sunshine League) hosts Scotland on Tuesday. Corsica/Stickney (1-2, 0-2 Sunshine League) hosts Parkston on Thursday in Corsica.
South Central 13, Colome 2 (7 innings)
GREGORY -- South Central recorded 13 hits as it topped Colome in Pony Hills League amateur baseball action on Sunday.
Aaron Vomacka, Blake Boes, Brandon McKnight and Tommy Determan each recorded two hits. Boes drove in two runs, while Christian Schweigert recorded a three-run triple. McKnight earned the win after giving up seven hits, two earned runs and striking out four batters in six innings.
For Colome, Jackson Kinzer, Turner Tinant, Calvin Ringing Shield and Shea Connot each had a hit. Kinzer took the loss. He gave up seven hits, 13 runs (six earned) and struck out zero batters in three innings.
South Central (3-1, 3-0 Pony Hills League) plays at Kimball/White Lake on Thursday. Colome (1-2, 1-1 Pony Hills League) hosts Chamberlain on Thursday.
Plankinton 13, Chamberlain 1 (7 innings)
MOUNT VERNON -- Plankinton smacked three home runs and finished with 11 hits in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball victory on Sunday.
Trevor Boyd, Josh Engquist and Alex Loes each went deep for the Bankers. Loes finished with three hits and three RBIs. Chris Hill and Travis Gant both had two hits and two RBIs. Kyle Bruinsma and Jesse Grosdidier each had a hit.
Engquist picked up the win. He mowed down 16 batters, gave up two hits and no earned runs in seven innings.
Ryan Randall and Mike Schwartz each recorded a hit. Randall’s two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for Chamberlain’s lone run.
Adam Schroeder took the loss. He scattered nine hits, gave up 10 runs (six earned) and struck out seven batters in five innings.
Plankinton (2-2, 2-1 Pony Hills League) plays Four Corners on Thursday in Chamberlain. Chamberlain (0-3, 0-3 Pony Hills League) plays at Colome on Thursday.
Yankton Tappers 10, Menno 4
YANKTON -- Devin Gullikson and Alex Lagrutta posted three hits apiece as the Yankton Tappers knocked off Menno in South Central League play on Sunday.
Lagrutta drove in two runs, while Mitch Gullikson posted two hits and two RBIs. Derrik Nelson recorded two hits. Colin Muth and Julito Fazzini each had a hit. Austin Wise earned the win. He struck out four batters, gave up two hits and allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings.
For Menno, Spencer Schultz logged two of the team’s six hits. Dylan Lehr, Tyler Miller, Cale Preszler and Kyler Pekarek each had a hit. Cody Ulmer took the loss. He allowed eight hits, 10 earned runs and struck out three batters in four innings.
Yankton (5-0, 5-0 South Central League) plays at Scotland on Thursday. Menno (3-2, 3-1 South Central League) hosts Wynot, Nebraska, on Thursday.
Dell Rapids PBR 6, Canova 1
DELL RAPIDS -- Dell Rapids PBR racked up 10 hits in a Cornbelt League victory over Canova on Sunday.
Matt Gillogly and Riley Hoffman each finished with three hits. Gillogly smacked a two-run homer for PBR. Hoffman also picked up the win. He gave up four hits, zero runs and struck out four batters in seven innings.
Tanner Solberg added two hits, while Aaron Hansen and Weston Hanson each had a hit.
For the Canova, Jared Miller, Derek Miller, Trey Krier and Tyler Genzlinger each recorded a hit. Derek Miller took the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned), nine hits and struck out nine batters in six innings.
