After a one-year hiatus, the Class B state amateur tournament is back at Mitchell’s Cadwell Park.
The 32-team, single-elimination tournament is Aug. 7-18 and teams began punching their tickets this week. Mitchell-area district tournaments start this Thursday and continue through Aug. 3 across the region.
Here’s a quick rundown of the area district-qualifying tournaments:
District 3B
When/where: Saturday-through-Aug. 2 in Plankinton.
Defending champion: Plankinton.

Participating teams/available bids: Eight teams playing for five spots.
Outlook: The bracket will be finalized later this week after the regular season wraps up for the Pony Hills League. There will be four games Saturday and four games Sunday. … Plankinton has secured the No. 1 seed in the tourney, while Four Corners is slotted in at the No. 2 seed. Colome is No. 8, but the third-through-seventh seeds are to be determined. … Plankinton, Four Corners, Miller/Wessington and Chamberlain qualified for state last season.
District 4B
When/where: Friday-through-Aug. 3 in Salem.
Defending champion: Canova.
Participating teams/available bids: Ten teams playing for six spots.
Outlook: Canova, which won last year’s state championship, finished the Cornbelt League schedule with an unblemished 18-0 mark. … The Gang will play the Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks vs. Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks winner on Saturday. … Madison earned the No. 2 seed with a 12-6 Cornbelt League record. The Broncs edged the Dell Rapids Mudcats (11-7) for the second seed. … Canova, Flandreau, Colman, Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks, Lennox and Madison advanced to state last season.
District 5B
When/where: Thursday-through-Aug. 2 in Parkston.
Defending champion: Winner/Colome.

Outlook: Alexandria is the No. 1 seed for the fourth straight season. … Alexandria and Winner/Colome went 11-3 in Sunshine League play, but the Angels earned the No. 1 seed after winning both meetings against the Pheasants. … Mount Vernon (10-4 Sunshine League) is the No. 3 seed and is hungry after missing last year’s state tourney. The Mustangs handed Alexandria its latest defeat, a 10-3 decision on July 16. … Alexandria, Winner/Colome, Corsica-Stickney, Dimock-Emery and Parkston all advanced to state last season.
District 6B
When/where: Thursday-through-Aug. 3 in Wynot, Nebraska.
Defending champion: Menno.
Participating teams/available bids: Eight teams playing for five spots.
Outlook: Crofton (Nebraska) locked up the No. 1 seed with a 11-5 mark in the league, edging No. 2 Tabor (10-6) for the top spot. … Wynot (Nebraska) and Lesterville are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, after both finished 9-7. Menno, which won last year’s district tourney, is a dangerous No. 5 seed. … Tabor, Menno, Wynot, Lesterville and Crofton all played in the state tournament last season.
