HURON - For the second straight season, Mitchell outside hitter Taylin Alm has blasted more kills than anyone on the court.
Coming into Tuesday’s District 3AA volleyball tournament match with Huron, Alm had 425 kills.
Needing just five kills to set the record, Alm finished the night with eight kills and lifted the mark to 433.
“I didn’t know that I broke it until after the game,” Alm said after Tuesday’s match, adding she had high praise for her setters and passers. “It doesn’t feel any different than it did last year, but I think I was more excited last year because my name got to be up there on the board.”
Last season, Alm broke Dana Misiaszek’s record of 413 kills at the Class AA state tournament. This season, Alm bested that mark before postseason play.

Mitchell volleyball coach Deb Thill said Alm’s production is up this season because of her move to the outside hitter position. Alm played middle hitter as a junior for the Kernels.
“This year she is on the outside and you are expected to take more swings there,” Thill said. “She is also a better player than she was last year.”
Thill said Alm’s dedication has led to many improvements over the years.
Alm also holds the school’s all-time career kills record, which she set earlier this season. Her career kill mark stands at 1,136.
Alm looks to add to both totals Saturday as the Kernels face Pierre in a District 3AA elimination game.
