Alexandria amateur team keeps league win after protest

The Sunshine League chose to override a protest from Dimock/Emery after the team claimed Alexandria broke the re-entry rule in an amateur baseball league game Sunday, June 3 in Alexandria.

The Sunshine League chose to override a protest from Dimock/Emery after the team claimed Alexandria broke the re-entry rule in an amateur baseball league game Sunday, June 3 in Alexandria.

League President Dave Roth said the arbitration board made the decision at a meeting among league managers on Monday night.

"We never really had any written rules on the re-entry rule," Roth said. "(Alexandria) had asked an umpire if they could do it and he said they could."

The situation arose after Alexandria relief pitcher Trever Vermeulen was pinch hit for in the game against Dimock/Emery, but then was put back on the mound to finish the game.

According to Roth, the league has decided to make an official rule regarding a similar situation and if the same scenario occurred in the future, Vermeulen would not be allowed to re-enter the game.

"That rule will get sent to all the managers," Roth said. "Each manager is supposed to give it to their umpires."

Roth said re-entry will still be legal in the league, however only starters can come back into a ballgame if taken out.

Players will only be allowed back in the lineup in their original spot in the order and pitchers and designated hitters will not be allowed to re-enter at any point if removed from the lineup.
