RAPID CITY-The Mount Vernon/Plankinton boys basketball team's season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday.

No. 8 Aberdeen Roncalli's Conner Fiedler gathered a rebound and scored with 2.1 seconds left in the game to give the Cavaliers a 50-49 win over the No. 6 Titans in the seventh-place game at the Class A state boys basketball tournament on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

"It's not over until you secure the rebound," said MVP head coach Eric Denning about the Cavaliers game-winning score. "I thought we defended it really well. It was a weird bounce off the rim and slipped through our hands. We just couldn't finish it."

A last-second 3-pointer by Tate Deinert fell short, ending the Titans season at 16-9. Deinert, who finished with a team-high 15 points, scored a go-ahead bucket to make the score 49-48 with 21 seconds left in the contest.

The Titans went 17-of-47 from the field for 36 percent, 6-of-20 from behind the arc for 30 percent and 9-of-19 from the line for 47 percent shooting in the loss. Cody Muilenburg had 13 points and Devin Rihanek chipped in 10 points for the Titans.

"I'm really proud of our kids because we competed as hard as we could," Denning said. "We were aggressive and played with a lot of intensity. We did everything we had to do. We just came up a point short in the end."

Gus Reede led the Cavaliers (16-10) with 25 points, while Fiedler added 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Logan Karst chipped in 11 points as Aberdeen Roncalli shot 41 percent from the floor (19-of-46).

The loss was heartbreaking for the Titans, who have gone winless in six state tournament games in the past two years. Despite the loss, Denning reflected on a successful season for MVP.

"The season was just magical," Denning said. "They are fun to coach. They are fun to have in practice. I can't say enough good things about them."
