It didn't take long for Aberdeen Central to establish control of Saturday's contest against Mitchell High School.

The Golden Eagles used stout defense and a balanced offense to jump out to a 43-16 lead at halftime, and eventually defeated Mitchell 71-30 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

"I thought we came out with some pretty good energy," Aberdeen Central head coach Dawn Seiler said. "We threw the ball away a couple times early, but then we settled down. We shot really well, but we also got some pretty good looks."

Brianna Kusler led the Golden Eagles with 20 points and four rebounds, while Paiton Burckhard contributed 16 points and eight rebounds. Aberdeen Central shot 29-of-50 from the floor for 58 percent and 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

"We get out on the break and (Kusler is) the one that handles the ball more times than not," Seiler said. "She always looks to advance the ball and finds the open player. In the half court set, she's such a capable scorer. She got into the paint with a little jumper in there. She brought energy and got us all going."

On the other hand, the Kernels struggled to keep up with Aberdeen Central's offense, shooting 11-of-34 from the floor for 32 percent. Mitchell also committed 16 turnovers in the contest.

"We didn't put any snap on our passing," Kernels head coach Wes Morgan said. "We started just throwing it to spots, and the kids weren't there. When you can't pass, it's just not going to happen."

Morgan said he was particularly disappointed with Mitchell's performance from the free-throw line, as the Kernels shot 5-of-21 from the line.

"We didn't make our free throws," he said. "Free throws alone would have kept us in the game in the first quarter. We shoot free throws all the time in practice, but in the game you just have to be tough enough to stand up to the line and knock them down."

Kendra Brewster was the Kernels' leading scorer, as she contributed nine points in the loss. The Golden Eagles (18-1) outrebounded Mitchell (2-16) 33-21 and recorded 12 steals. With the defeat, the Kernels' losing streak now stands at 10 entering Monday's contest at Huron. Meanwhile, Aberdeen concludes the regular season against Brookings on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

"We have to prepare for (Huron) now," Morgan said. "Ultimately, we're trying to set ourselves up for Huron and Yankton to finish our season, because we can compete with them."
