Gregory graduate Robert Vomacka helped the Northern State University football team picked up its second straight win of the season.
The junior wide receiver hauled in a touchdown reception as the Wolves earned a 24-22 win over Upper Iowa on Oct. 5. Vomacka finished with two receptions for 33 yards, including his 19-yard touchdown reception to give NSU a 17-15 advantage late in the second quarter. The Wolves tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter and later hung on for the victory.
It was Vomacka’s first touchdown of the season. He has hauled in nine catches for 88 yards during the season.
The Wolves (3-2) host No. 3 Minnesota State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for their annual Gypsy Days game at Swisher Field. The game will be aired on MidcoSN as the NSIC Game of the Week.
Brewster, Mines upset Orediggers
Mitchell graduate Chelsea Brewster and the South Dakota School of Mines volleyball team took down No. 23 Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 5 in Golden, Colorado.
The Hardrockers dropped the first two sets, but rallied back and claimed the match in five sets. It’s the first time in the NCAA Division II era the Hardrockers have beaten a nationally-ranked opponent. It’s also the first time in school history they’ve defeated the Orediggers.
Brewster tallied four kills, four blocks and five digs in the match. The freshman outside hitter has logged 20 kills, 26 digs and seven total blocks this season.
The Hardrockers (7-9) will host Chadron State on Friday in Rapid City.
Johanneson, Trojans in three-way tie for North Star lead
Lake Andes native Payton Johanneson recently helped the Dakota State University volleyball team knock off Waldorf (Iowa) College on Oct. 4. The victory extended DSU's winning streak to a season-high six matches, the longest winning streak since 2015 season (seven straight wins).
Dakota State, who received votes recognition in the NAIA volleyball top-25 national poll for the first time in program history, earned their seventh win in the last eight matches.
Johanneson -- a sophomore hitter -- recorded three kills, four digs and three block assists in the win. This season, she has 48 kills, 27 digs and 10 aces.
Entering Wednesday’s action, Dakota State, Bellevue and Viterbo are in a three-way tie for first-place in the North Star Athletic Association conference standings with a 5-1 record. The Trojans visited Bellevue on Wednesday.
