The downpour that soaked Mitchell and much of the surrounding area not only caused flooding, but it also impacted local sporting events.

A pair of prep football games will be moved to Joe Quintal Field Friday. Corsica-Stickney will play Hanson at 6 p.m., while Mount Vernon/Plankinton will play Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan to follow. MVP athletic director Eric Denning said if the interstate is closed between Plankinton and Mitchell, the game won’t be played Friday. A final decision will be made by noon on Friday.

South Dakota High School Activities Association Assistant Executive Director John Krogstrand said it will let the schools decide if they will play football games on Friday.

A handful of Mitchell High School events were canceled on Thursday. The cross country team was slated to compete in the Aberdeen Invite, but it was called off, as well as the Kernel cheer and dance team competitions in Yankton.

The Kernel girls tennis team planned to travel to Sioux Falls Washington for a dual meet, but upon learning of interstate closures, it was postponed.

The Mitchell freshman football team’s game at Brookings was also canceled, along with boys and girls junior varsity soccer games in Watertown. The Mitchell boys golf team will also not go to Yankton today.

Mitchell Christian’s volleyball match against Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in Forestburg was moved from Thursday to Monday. Canistota’s volleyball match at home against Dell Rapids St. Mary has been postponed to a later date. The Kimball/White Lake and Tripp-Delmont/Armour volleyball match in Armour was called off. Corsica-Stickney’s volleyball match at James Valley Christian was postponed to a later date.

Platte-Geddes was also slated to face Bon Homme in volleyball action on Thursday, but the match in Tyndall was postponed. Other matches to be postponed include Bridgewater-Emery and Irene-Wakonda, Ethan at Menno, Gregory at Wagner, Hanson at Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Plankinton, Freeman Academy/Marion at Scotland, Elkton-Lake Benton at Howard. Dates to reschedule have yet to be announced.

McCook Central/Montrose was originally scheduled to compete in the Big East Conference tournament in Beresford, but it has been switched to a one-day event on Saturday, with a best of three format until the championship match.

Cross-country teams from Canistota, Howard and Kimball/White Lake were also scheduled to compete in the De Smet Invite, but the meet was canceled and will not be rescheduled.

Winner was scheduled to travel to Wagner on Friday in a prep football tilt, but that game has been postponed until Saturday, with no time announced yet.

The status of the Bon Homme-Parkston football game in Tyndall will be determined Friday, with the decision hinging upon travel for Parkston.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian is scheduled to play Sunshine Bible Academy at 2 p.m. in Miller as scheduled, despite Tripp-Delmont canceling school on Friday.
