SIOUX FALLS-One big offensive inning proved to be the difference in both games of a Junior Legion baseball doubleheader between Mitchell and Sioux Falls West.
Mitchell exploded for six runs in the sixth inning in Game 1, leading to an 8-7 win. However, Sioux Falls salvaged the doubleheader with an 11-run third inning in the second game for a 14-2 victory in five innings.
In Game 1, Mitchell's bats were kept quiet until the sixth inning. An error, two walks and two singles put the first five batters on base to start the inning, including an RBI single from Tate Ellwein. Colby Gillen hit a two-RBI single a couple of batters later to highlight the inning, while later scoring on an error to give Mitchell the lead.
Gillen finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Mitchell had seven hits as a team. Josh Grosdidier earned the win, tossing two shutout innings. Tate DeBoer's five-inning start featured seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and four walks.
For Sioux Falls, Matt Winterton took the loss as he gave up seven runs (six earned) in 5 1/3 innings.
Sioux Falls scattered five hits across an 11-run third frame in the second game, but it was also helped by three hit by pitches, two walks and two errors. Mitchell committed four errors as a team.
Masen Thompson lasted 2 1/3 innings in his start, allowing nine runs (five earned), despite only giving up three hits and two walks. Gillen gave up five runs (two earned) in the final 1 2/3 innings. Mitchell was held to three hits as a team, with Jacob Ebeling earning the win.
Mitchell (4-4) plays in the Rochester Rundown tournament in Rochester, Minnesota, this weekend.
