RAPID CITY-Former Mitchell High School standout Tracy Sprenkel was one of nine individuals inducted into the South Dakota High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame last Saturday at the state tournament in Rapid City.

Sprenkel won back-to-back 189-pound state championships for the Kernels in 1990 and 1991, amassing a career record of 80-12-1.

His performance in 1991 helped lead Mitchell to the Class A state championship, as the Kernels scored a school-record 177 points in the process. Sprenkel was unable to attend the ceremony, but former teammate and cousin, Brandon Vilhauer, accepted the award on his behalf.

"That means more to me than the individual one," Sprenkel said. "And my cousin accepting the award for me made it all that much better.

Other inductees included: Jonas Weiss (Hot Springs), Terry Weischedel (Gettysburg), Steve Colling (Rapid City Central), Lee Ron Paszek (Webster), Dave Michaud (Pine Ridge), Steve Keszler (Sturgis, Bon Homme and Northern State), Daryl Schmidt (Miller) and Jim McClone (Flandreau).
