The calendar has flipped to March and that means things are about to pick up for the Mitchell Aquatic Club.
MAC will send 48 total swimmers to the Short Course State A Championship Meet in Sioux Falls. The meet starts today and continues through Sunday at the Midco Aquatic Center.
It's the start of a busy stretch for most of the MAC swimmers.
"It's important because it's our state championship meet," MAC coach Clyde Smith said. "But it will help us qualify for meets in the other areas of the country."
MAC will also send swimmers to the Speedo Sectionals on March 14-17 in Rochester, Minnesota, the Four Corner Sectionals on March 20-23 in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Midwest Regional on March 22-23 in Minneapolis.
"We almost have to hit some of these qualifying times, just kind of for where the ability of the kids are," Smith said. "... We are kind of using this as a jump off to kind of get to that one step up at a regional-level meet."
But first comes the state swimming meet. Smith said the swimmers have done predictor sets in practice to gauge their times and they are peaking at the right time.
"They are actually swimming faster than the fastest times they will be seeded with," Smith said. "So we are really excited to see how fast they will actually go and not as worried about them hitting their times. We just have no idea how much faster they are going to go."
Individually, Smith expects big things from his seniors.
"Ethan Huber should have an awesome meet," Smith said. "Caleb Swanson should have an awesome meet. Jay Paulson should have an awesome meet and then our senior girls-Cailey Scott and Dani Norden should have phenomenal meets, as well. We have some little kids that came out of nowhere this year. I am excited to see how they will do."
