RAPID CITY -- Tonight’s state wrestling championship matches will feature 14 Class B wrestlers at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
It also includes three area-on-area matchups, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Central.
Winner Area’s Wyatt Turnquist takes on Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington’s Tate Haider at 138 pounds. Turnquist pinned Carsten McNeil, of Redfield Area, in the semifinals, while Haider won an 8-1 decision over McCoy Peterson, of Philip Area.
The Warriors also have Sam Kruger taking on Parkston’s Lucas Bietz at 160 as both won via decision in their semifinal match. Kruger defeated McCook Central/Montrose’s Blake Gessner, 6-4, and Bietz took down Custer/Edgemont’s Levi Mines, 12-5.
At 220, Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney’s Jesse Hastings faces Wagner’s KJ St. Pierre after both earned a pin in the semifinal. Hastings pinned Bennett County’s Tee Allen and St. Pierre did the same to Kimball/White Lake/Platte Geddes’ Tyler Resick after trailing in the third period.
A pair of area wrestlers had to beat a top seed to advance to the finals. Howard’s EJ Leetch -- who takes on Redfield Area’s Barrett Wren at 195 -- won a 3-1 decision over Canton’s Cullen Rutten. And Dawson Lensing, of Wagner, topped Lead-Deadwood’s Rob Lester in the 285 semis, setting up a matchup with Webster Area’s Chase Sigdestad.
Winner also sent Kaden Keiser and Trevor Peters at 120 and 152, respectively. Keiser defeated Canton’s Braxton Trowbridge to face Redfield’s Bradyn Robbins. Peters set up a match with Faulkton Area’s Alex Aesoph after winning a 4-3 decision over Custer/Edgemont’s Chance Grill.
Parkston will be represented by No. 1 Riley Weber against Riley Whitley, of Redfield, at 106. Weber took down Custer/Edgemont’s Logan Graf with an 8-6 decision in the semis.
Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon’s Josh Crownover won 10-2 over Tanner Even, of Parker. He will face Canton’s undefeated top seed Shaeden Scheidt in a rematch of last year’s 160-pound state final, which Crownover won.
Howard also has Lane Miller at 113, facing Faulkton’s Gage Martinmaas. He won 5-1 over WSWWW’s Keegan Haider to advance to the finals.
Burke/Gregory’s Jackson Eklund takes on top-seeded Caden Lamer, of Tri-Valley, at 145. Eklund won a 13-3 major decision over Philip’s Hunter Peterson in his semifinal match.
