BROOKINGS-The Mitchell High School gymnastics team had a strong showing at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet on Saturday, edging Watertown for the team title. The Kernels scored 145.800 points, while Watertown finished in second with 144.125.
Mitchell produced positive results on every event, leading the field in vault (26.950 points), bars (36.475) and beam (35.300), while placing second in floor (37.075). It also placed two gymnasts in the top-three of all-around.
Watertown's Myah Morris (37.425) claimed the all-around crown. However, Mitchell had the second and third-place gymnasts in Kaylee Bauder (36.825) and Maria Krall (36.550), respectively.
Bauder placed third in vault (9.3750), but scored 9.3000 in beam to take first. Krall placed first in bars (9.6000) and third in beam (8.9500) for the Kernels.
Kyra Gropper notched a second-place finish in beam (8.9750) and third-place finish in bars with 9.0250 points, as well. Alyssa Hughes and Emily Moody tied for fourth in vault, while Hughes also took fifth in bars and Masy Mock placed fifth in floor.
The Kernels compete in the state tournament meet on Friday and Saturday in Brookings.
