The Mitchell High School boys basketball team’s turnovers came back to haunt it on Friday at the Corn Palace. As the Kernels racked up 22 turnovers, they fell 67-43 to Sioux Falls O’Gorman at the Hoop City Classic.

“(O’Gorman) doesn’t even need to run offense because we just turn it over and it leads to a dunk or layup,” Mitchell coach Todd Neuendorf said. “That’s been a trend that’s happened in every game.”

Despite eight turnovers in the first quarter, the Kernels only trailed 18-16 at the end of the frame. Mitchell held the Knights to 6 of 14 shooting, while a pair of Kaden Soukup 3-pointers kept it within striking distance. After that, the Kernels went 2-for-9 from deep in the final three quarters.

The game changed quickly in the second quarter. O’Gorman capitalized on eight more Kernel turnovers, starting the quarter on an 11-3 run and eventually extending its lead to 38-20 by halftime. The Knights scored 21 points off turnovers in the first half.

The Knights made 11 of 13 shots in the second, highlighted by a series of Akoi Akoi’s breakaway one-handed slams. He finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Meanwhile, Mitchell’s 5-for-8 start from the field was met with a 2 of 9 shooting quarter as it continued to struggle with O’Gorman’s man-to-man press.

“We burned three timeouts trying to go against a token man-to-man press that wasn’t special,” Neuendorf said. “... They’re just more physical and stronger than us, putting us where they wanted to. We just got beat up again.”

O’Gorman continued to bully the Kernels inside in the second half, as the Knights finished shooting 50.9 percent from the field and 58.5 percent from inside the arc. It also used nine offensive rebounds to its advantage.

Carter Jacobsen had 16 points for Mitchell to go along with five rebounds. Caden Hinker added 10 points, as well. Luke Ronsiek scored a team-high 14 points for the Knights, while Jeremy Jones and Zach Norton added 11 and 10, respectively.

“At least it gets easier tomorrow when we play (Mountain Brook’s Trendon Watford),” a sarcastic Neuendorf said, adding they won’t talk strategy about guarding him ahead of the game. “And they press the whole time. That’ll be exciting.”

The Kernels (0-5) face USA Today’s No. 16-ranked Mountain Brook (Ala.) at 5 p.m. today at the Corn Palace. The Knights (2-2) play Findlay Prep (Nev.) at 5 p.m. today at the Sanford Pentagon.

NOTES: Mitchell High School seniors Soukup and Payton Morgan were awarded the Gary Munsen Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 before the game.
