Catching up with former area athletes: Selland propels Augustana women to 8-1 start
The Augustana University women's basketball team is off to an 8-1 start, thanks in part to Letcher native Shelby Selland posting her best campaign to date.
Selland, a 6-foot-2 senior, is tied for the team-high with 12.2 points per game, while leading Augustana with 9.3 rebounds per game, both of which are career-highs. The Sanborn Central graduate also four double-doubles this season, posting career-highs in points (21) and rebounds (14) against Washburn on Nov. 9.
Augustana travels to Winona State on Friday.
Waddell wins two at Minnesota Invite
University of Minnesota swimmer and Mitchell graduate Tevyn Waddell scored wins in two events at the three-day Minnesota Invite from Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
On the opening day, Waddell competed in the 500-yard freestyle for the first time since her junior year of high school and still came away with a win. The junior Golden Gopher swam 4:45.42 to beat Utah's Sara McClendon by nearly two seconds.
Waddell came back the following day to swim in the 200 freestyle and once again swam to victory as her time of 1:46.58 was more than a full second faster than Utah's Ianire Casarin.
Minnesota returns to the pool on Jan. 12 in a dual meet at Hawaii.
Local duo earn top five finishes at SDSU Holiday Invite
South Dakota State University had a pair of local runners place in the top five during its first indoor track and field event of the season. Burke graduate Allison Sebern and Mitchell alumna Mary Krause both placed in the top five at the SDSU Holiday Invite on Nov. 30-Dec.1.
Sebern, a junior, placed fifth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:36.85, which was roughly a second off the lead.
Beginning her second indoor season, Krause ran 5:40.64 to place fourth in the mile run for the Jackrabbit women, who placed third out of 14 teams at the event.
South Dakota State competes again on Jan. 12 in a dual meet at North Dakota.
