State championship volleyball roundup: Warner gets payback on Northwestern

SIOUX FALLS—Northwestern and Warner have ruled the Class B state volleyball tournament over the years, combining for 25 state championship game appearances and 16 state titles in the last 27 years, and for the second straight year, they met once again in Saturday's Class B final.

After losing in four sets last season, No. 2 Warner bounced back from a first-set loss to win three straight to dethrone two-time defending state champion and top-seeded Northwestern, 15-25, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-12.

Warner (36-2): Laurie Rogers and Ashley Fischbach each recorded 17 kills, while Rogers added eight digs and 4.5 blocks and Fischbach had a match-high 28 digs. Sydney Leidholt had 13 kills and 18 digs for the Monarchs.

Northwestern (37-3): Caitlyn Fischbach and Riley Grandpre had 11 kills apiece in defeat for the Wildcats, while Sydney Schell had had eight kills and 19 digs. Madalyn Groft added 29 assists and 20 digs.

Sioux Falls Christian 3, Miller 0

SIOUX FALLS—For the eighth time in the last 12 years, No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian was crowned Class A state champions on Saturday after a three-set win over No. 1 Miller, 25-17, 25-14 and 25-12.

Sioux Falls Christian (31-8): Kylee Van Egdom recorded 11 aces, 10 kills, 10 digs and two blocks for the Chargers. Van Egdom's 19 aces in three sets broke her own state tournament record, set as a freshman in 2015. Samantha Fykstra added 22 assists and eight digs.

Miller (30-3): Kadye Fernholz had 13 kills and eight digs in defeat for the Rustlers, while Rachel Oligmueller had 18 assists and five digs.

Rapid City Stevens 3, Sioux Falls Washington 0

SIOUX FALLS—After finishing as the runner-up at the state volleyball tournament last season, No. 1 Rapid City Stevens returned on Saturday to sweep No. 2 Sioux Falls Washington to win the Class AA championship for the first time since 2007, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-22.

Rapid City Stevens (34-1): Phebie Rossi had 11 kills, while Elizabeth Schaefer had seven kills and 15 digs and Marlee Schneider added 27 assists in the win for the Raiders.

Sioux Falls Washington (30-6): Lily Bartling had a match-high 12 kills and 10 digs in defeat for the Warriors. Samiya Jami had nine kills and 16 digs, while Phekran Kong added seven kills and Aspen Langley handed out 27 assists.
