State volleyball roundup: Arrows survive against Huron
SIOUX FALLS—No. 4 Watertown won a back-and-forth match against Huron on Thursday in the Class AA state volleyball quarterfinals. Set scores were 25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 24-26 and 19-17.
Watertown (22-6): Tayler Corey and Mariah Gloe both had 20 digs for the Arrows, though Gloe also added 18 kills. Annie Norberg led the team with 25 assists, while Sophie Tietz recorded 15 kills in the win. The Arrows play No. 1 Rapid City Stevens at 6 p.m. today.
Huron (17-8): Tenley Buddenhagen paved the way for the Tigers, recording 34 assists and 12 digs. Hollee Niehus added 22 kills and 13 digs. Havyn Heinz pitched in 29 digs, too. The Tigers play No. 8 Brookings at noon today.
SF Washington 3, SF Roosevelt 1
SIOUX FALLS—No. 2 Sioux Falls Washington took care of business on Thursday, defeating No. 7 Sioux Falls Roosevelt in four sets. Set scores were 25-15, 25-11, 22-25 and 25-18.
Sioux Falls Washington (29-5): Aspen Langley had a team-high 43 assists for the Warriors. Peyton Rymerson recorded 20 digs and Lily Bartling finished with 16 kills and eight digs in the win. The Warriors play Sioux Falls O'Gorman at 7:45 p.m. today.
Sioux Falls Roosevelt (16-14): Katherine Nelson had team highs of 12 assists and 10 digs for the Rough Riders. Elizabeth Denevan also had 12 assists, while Leah Koltz put down 11 kills. The Rough Riders play Mitchell at 1:45 p.m. today.
Rapid City Stevens 3, Brookings 0
SIOUX FALLS—No. 1 Rapid City Stevens cruised by No. 8 Brookings on Thursday in the Class AA state volleyball quarterfinals. Set scores were 25-17, 25-23 and 25-20.
Rapid City Stevens (32-1): Marlee Schneider ended with 31 assists and nine digs for the Raiders, while Phebie Rossi added 11 kills in the win. Elizabeth Schaefer finished with 13 kills and nine digs, though Laura Petik had a team-high 17 digs. The Raiders play No. 4 Watertown at 6 p.m. today.
Brookings (15-14): Michaela Jewett paved the way for the Bobcats, finishing with 27 assists and a 11 digs. Miranda Ysbrand added 11 digs and Kailee Bartels led the team with eight kills. The Bobcats play No. 5 Huron at noon today.
Miller 3, Rapid City Christian 0
SIOUX FALLS—No. 1 Miller had no problems getting past No. 8 Rapid City Christian in the Class A state volleyball tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. Set scores were 25-19, 25-12 and 25-10.
Miller (29-2): Kadye Fernholz recorded 23 kills and eight digs in the win for the Rustlers. Rachel Oligmueller dished out 42 assists to go along with six digs, while Madison Wetz finished with a team-high 13 digs. The Rustlers play No. 5 Elk-Point Jefferson at 6 p.m. today.
Rapid City Christian (25-13): Riley Freeland had 14 assists, five digs and two kills for the Comets. Tori Altstiel and Olivia Kieffer both had seven kills, while Altstiel recorded a team-high eight digs. The Comets play No. 4 Winner at noon today.
Sioux Falls Christian 3, Parker 0
SIOUX FALLS—No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian held Parker to four points in the first set en route to a straight-set win in the Class A state volleyball tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. Set scores were 25-4, 25-22 and 25-10.
Sioux Falls Christian (29-8): Jamaica Calkhoven and Abby Glanzer both had 14 digs for the Chargers. Kylee Van Egdom added 19 kills and eight digs in the win. Samantha Fykstra finished with 34 assists and nine digs, as well. The Chargers play No. 2 McCook Central/Montrose at 7:45 p.m. today.
Parker (26-8): Logan Gusso had a team-high nine kills for the Pheasants. Grace Leberman added 14 digs and eight kills in the loss. Hannah Even recorded 16 assists and eight digs. The Pheasants play No. 7 Aberdeen Roncalli at 1:45 p.m. today.
Faith 3, Faulkton Area 2
SIOUX FALLS—No. 4 Faith came back from a two-set deficit to beat No. 5 Faulkton Area in five sets on Thursday in the Class B state volleyball quarterfinals. Set scores were 19-25, 21-25, 25-12, 26-24 and 15-11.
Faith (30-1): Sydnie Schauer paved the way for the Longhorns, finishing with 33 assists and 17 digs. Shianne Price added 12 kills and five digs in the win, while Jayden Shoemaker recorded a team-best 20 digs. The Longhorns play No. 1 Northwestern at 6 p.m. today.
Faulkton Area (25-7): Grace Schlechter and Avery Deiter dished out 25 and 22 assists, respectively. Peyton Melius added 22 kills and 21 digs for the Trojans. The Trojans play No. 8 Kimball/White Lake at noon today.
