YANKTON-The Mitchell High School girls cross-country team had a strong outing on Saturday in the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet at Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton. The Kernels placed fifth out of nine teams.
Eighth-grader Kennedy Olsen led Mitchell, placing 12th in a field of 74 runners, posting a time of 19:37.71. Adelyn Prunty, a seventh-grader, placed 29th with a time of 20:42.57, while teammate Tayler Factor finished just behind in 30th place and timed out at 20:43.95. Annika Vermeulen was 38th and TyAnn Hart was 40th, while Madeline Vogel placed 45th.
Ellie Abraham of Brookings was the individual champion after nipping Aberdeen Central's Melanie Jacobs by 0.31 seconds. Aberdeen Central won the team championship with 53 points, slightly better than Brandon Valley's 60 and Huron's 64
On the boys side, the youthful Kernels placed ninth as a team, but sophomore Lucas Moller placed 18th overall individually, posting a time of 17:47.97. Eighth-grader Dawson Miller and freshman Carter Moller placed 63rd and 64th, respectively. Nate McCormick, Derek Factor, Dawson Schroeder and T.J. Daley all finished consecutively, with each breaking the 21-minute barrier in the race.
Aberdeen Central edged Brandon Valley for the team championship, while Aaron Ryan of Aberdeen Central won boys race with a time of 15:42.95, beating Brandon Valley's Britton Elkin by nearly 25 seconds.
Mitchell is slated to compete in the Huron Invitational on Thursday.
