DWU volleyball splits pair of matches over weekend
The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team split a pair of home matches at the Corn Palace on Saturday. The Tigers started the day by beating York College in straight sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-15, but lost a five-set battle to Presentation College, 25-23, 9-25, 22-25, 25-10, 17-15.
DWU (10-2) used quick starts in each set to get by York. The Tigers opened the first set with a 9-3 lead, followed by winning the first 11 points in the second set. They also gained a 9-2 lead to open the final set.
DWU's success was in part due to it serving eight aces, including three from Rebecca Frick and two from Sara Herman. Frick was also the only Tiger with double-digit kills as her 14 led the match. Sydney Fritz added seven kills, while Herman led the team with 13 digs. Frick and Madlyn Christiansen each added seven digs, as well.
Against Presentation, the Tigers used a 13-0 run to win the second set and ended the third set with a 9-4 run. However, in the final set, the Saints rattled off three straight points to stave off a DWU match point and take the match.
Bridgett Knobbe finished with a match-high 52 assists, while Chelsey Heeg served all three of DWU's aces. Frick had 22 kills and 20 digs. Fritz finished with 13 kills, and Herman recorded 24 digs.
DWU plays Briar Cliff at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
