MHS girls blank Garretson
Mia Mullenmeister notched a hat trick and the Mitchell High School girls soccer team blanked Garretson 3-0 on Thursday.
Mullenmeister netted one goal in the first period and two in the second period at the Joe Quintal Field.
"I thought that the team started out very strong (Thursday)," Mitchell coach Bob Lemon said. "We controlled the midfield and had some chances early. We struggled at the end of the half and couldn't get control or possession. Garretson took it to us at the close of the first half and we were perhaps fortunate not to give up a goal."
After scoring toward the end of the first period, Mullenmeister tacked on two more in the second and now leads the Kernels with nine goals this season.
"Mia has been really consistent up front for us," Lemon said. "She plays with a lot of hustle and is striking the ball very well."
It was Mitchell's first time playing on the newly-turf Joe Quintal Field.
"The team struggled a bit with the play of the ball on the turf," Lemon said. "It has more bounce than a traditional grass field, but both teams had to adjust to the playing conditions. The touch will come as the team has more experience playing on the artificial surface."
Caroline Titze finished with 11 saves. Mitchell outshot the Blue Dragons, 21-11.
"The second half, we were able to re-establish control of the center of the field and gave ourselves more attacking opportunities," Lemon said.
Mitchell (3-2-1) plays at Brookings on Sept. 4.
