MHS boys golf takes fourth in Pierre
PIERRE—The Mitchell High School boys golf team was one of 13 schools competing in the Pierre Invitational at Hillsview Golf Course on Tuesday.
The Kernels shot their way to a fourth-place finish, ending with 315 strokes.
"I'm very pleased," Mitchell head coach Mark Horan said. "It's one of the lowest scores we've shot in a lot of years. Top-to-bottom, everyone played really smart, really well."
Mitchell was led by Ethan Huber, whose consistent day on the course culminated in 76 strokes and a 12th-place finish. He shot a 38 on both the front and back nine.
"Ethan's confidence is growing daily," Horan said. "He's having a good start to his senior year. He can really dissect a golf course. He has really good control of the golf ball right now."
Max Dailey and Nick Bennett were both able to stay in the top 20, as well. Dailey carded a 78 to finish in 17th, while Bennett took 20th with 80 strokes. Horan credited Mitchell's overall success to it being able to avoid the many hazards in Pierre's golf course.
Max Tupper started the day strong with a 39 on the front nine, though a 42 on the back nine resulted in 81 strokes and a 24th-place finish. Kade Clark shot an 86 and Jakob Studer ended with 87 strokes.
RC Stevens won the event by 12 strokes as it shot a 286. Watertown (298) and Spearfish (299) finished second and third, respectively.
Sam Grout, of Spearfish, RC Stevens' Ben Daane and Aberdeen Central's Ethan Vikander all shot 70 but finished in aforementioned order due to tiebreaker rules.
