Renner advances to Class A championship game
RENNER—The Renner Monarchs racked up 16 hits on Friday to take down Aberdeen, 10-1, advancing to the Class A amateur baseball state championship game.
Renner was powered by a five-run fifth inning, which gave it a commanding 7-1 lead.
David Borchardt started the inning with a home run, while Jason Nyhus, who finished 2-for-6 with three RBIs, hit a two-RBI single later in the inning. Chaz Palmer followed by hitting an RBI single one batter later and Corey Vasquez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Renner's fifth run of the inning.
For Renner, Grant Hieb and Brian McGuire both had three hits, while Palmer, Eric DeJong and David Borchardt each had two hits. Kris Regas earned the win, striking out seven and only allowing an unearned run over a five-inning start.
Kelly Coates had a team-high three hits for Aberdeen, while Chad Ellingson also recorded two hits. Lucas Heiser suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.
In the Class A elimination games, Seth Fraser hit a walk-off home run for Brookings in the 10th inning to beat Sioux Falls, 9-8. Castlewood used 13 hits to beat Yankton, 10-3.
Brookings and Castlewood play today at 11 a.m. in an elimination game, with the winner facing Aberdeen in another elimination game at 5:30 p.m.
