WATERTOWN -- Fueled by three golfers in the top 20, the Mitchell High School girls golf team placed fourth at the Watertown Invitational on Monday.

The Kernels carded a 372, which was two strokes behind third-place Watertown Purple. Aberdeen Central (323) and Pierre (351) placed first and second, respectively, at the invite at Prairie Winds Country Club.

Aberdeen Central’s Sydney Wirebaugh was the individual medalist with a 76, just edging teammate Brooklyn Hofer and Pierre’s Annabelle Simpson by one stroke.

Masy Mock paced the Kernels with an 83, which was good for seventh place. She shot a 44 on the front nine, but fired a 39 on the back nine.

“Masy is always pretty consistent in the lower 80s,” Mitchell coach Keri Munsen said. “I know and she knows she can even do better. When her long game is on her short game is off, and vice versa. Somehow she keeps it together for the most part.”

Munsen was especially pleased with Makayla Grissom, who shot an 85 and placed ninth. She shot a 44 on the front nine and a 41 on the back.

“She brought her potential yet again,” Munsen said about Grissom. “I have said it for a couple of years now that this is where I know she can shoot and she’s finally starting to come out of her shell and playing really well and at the right time.”

Ashley Zimmer shot a 92 and tied for 17th place. Delilah Brinker and Emma Bradley shot a 112 and a 117, respectively.

Up next, the Kernels will compete at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Invitational on Thursday in Harrisburg as their season draws to a close.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way the girls are playing,” Munsen said. “Especially seeing those scores and where we can actually place in the state. I really couldn’t be prouder of them.”
