DWU softball splits with Dordt

The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader with Dordt College 4-1 and 9-2 on Thursday at McWhirter Field. The Tigers are now 14-22 overall and 10-8 in the GPAC.

In Game 1, DWU scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. The Tigers scored the runs after a fielding error by the Dordt right fielder.

Alyssa Garcia went 1-for-3 with an RB, while Stephanie Gabel tallied three RBI's. Andriana Sprakel and Paige Kinley both finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a run score. Alyson VanderPol earned the win, allowing four hits and one earned run.

In Game 2, Dordt posted four runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. The Defenders padded their lead to 9-0 with three more runs in the fifth inning. Sprakel got DWU on the board with an RBI single and Chaydon Metzger drove in DWU's other run. Regan Nebel had a 2-for-2 performance in Game 2. Devany Farris was tabbed with the loss as she pitched four and two-third innings, striking out three batters and allowing eight earned runs.

DWU concludes the regular season against the College of Saint Mary in a GPAC contest at 1 p.m. Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
