DWU softball earns home sweep over Hastings

Playing its first home game of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team earned a sweep over Hastings College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at McWhirter Field.

It was also Senior Day for the Tigers, who won the first game 4-0 and took the second game 5-4.

In Game 1, DWU took and early 1-0 lead after the first inning and added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earnt he win. Sierra Haage held the Broncos scoreless and allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in seven innings pitched to earn the win. Haage also had an RBI double at the plate, while Amber Budmark and Alyssa Garcis each had doubles. Andriana Sprakel finished the game with two RBIs.

In Game 2, DWU flipped a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held off a Bronco rally for the win. Paige Kinley, Stephanie Gabel, Andrea Konz and Budmark each recorded two hits, while Karly Severance had two RBIs. Haage picked up the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

The Tigers (13-21, 9-7 GPAC) host Dordt College in the final home game of the season at 4:30 p.m. today at McWhirter Field.
