After falling 3-1 in extra innings in the first game, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team bounced back in the second game in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader against Dordt College on Friday at Drake Field.
DWU used a five-run second inning and picked an 11-2 win to earn a split in the Tigers' first home games of the season.
In Game 2, Kyle Bailey hit a two-RBI single, Wes Anderson followed up with an RBI double and two more runs scored on a Dordt error in the five-run second inning. The Tigers continued to capitalize on Dordt errors, scoring three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Gunnar Johnson earned the win, giving up one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts in five innings pitched. Steven Sagasty tossed two innings of relief in the win, picking up three strikeouts.
Game 1 featured a pitcher's duel between DWU's Dominique Boerger and Dordt's Luke Drooger. Boerger recorded 14 strikeouts in seven innings pitched, while giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits. Drooger picked up the win, holding the Tigers to one earned run on two hits in eight innings pitched with eight strikeouts.
Anderson gave DWU a 1-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Defenders answered with a run in the top of seventh inning to force extra innings. In the eighth inning, Dordt scored two runs on DWU's lone error in the contest.
Anderson finished the doubleheader with three hits and two RBIs, while Bailey had three RBIs and Reed Harter added a hit and two RBIs.
DWU (7-14, 3-5 GPAC) will play at Dordt again on Monday in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Tigers scheduled games against Mount Marty have been moved to Wednesday, which opened up because DWU's game at South Dakota State has been rescheduled to April 23.
