Six Mitchell High School wrestlers placed as the Kernels took sixth place at the their home tournament—the Jerry Opbroek Invitational on Saturday in Mitchell.

The Kernels recorded 71 team points, while Rapid City Stevens won the nine-team event with 181.5 points. Pierre took second with 173 points, Bon Homme and Wagner tied for seventh with 44 points and Parkston placed ninth with 21 points.

MHS head coach Travis Carpenter said he was happy with how his team performed in the final round of the meet, noting the Kernels won four of their last six matches.

"We are heading in the right direction, we just have to finish," Carpenter said. "It's all about finishing. There were quite a few matches on the day that if we wrestle well in the third period, we would've ended up winning them."

Briggs Havlik was Mitchell's highest finisher, taking second place at 160-pounds. Havlik was tied 3-3 with Pierre's Austin Senger late in the championship match before succumbing to a takedown in the final 10 seconds.

"You make a couple of mistakes in a match against a good kid, it's going to end up costing you," Carpenter said. "It's better now than later on. We can learn from those things."

Carson Max, who placed third at 195 pounds, suffered a similar defeat to Howard's E.J. Leetch in the semifinal round. Leetch scored a takedown in the match's final seconds and went on to beat Parkston's Brady Schoenfelder in the championship match.
