Lynx shoot past Mitchell

Offensively, it was likely Mitchell's best game of the season Tuesday night at the Corn Palace.

But defensively, the Kernels couldn't take Brandon Valley off its game, as the Lynx drilled 10 3-pointers and pulled away for a 73-57 victory in Eastern South Dakota Conference boys basketball action.

Mitchell (0-8, 0-5 ESD) didn't have an answer for Brandon Valley's inside game in the first half and the Lynx responded after halftime with seven 3-pointers in the third period, stretching a 10-point lead to 22 before the fourth quarter.

(In the first half), they just took it to us in the post," Mitchell coach Todd Neuendorf said. "We said in the locker room at halftime that one of the two teams is going to call a timeout because we're either going to keep our run going or they're going to make one. They stepped out and hit some threes. That was the difference in the basketball game."

The Kernels battled closely with the Lynx through the first nine minutes of the game, only to see the Lynx (3-3, 3-2 ESD) put together a 10-0 run to lead 26-12 midway through the second quarter. Mitchell trailed by 15 points with 90 seconds to go in the half before Jordon Johnson bookended a Baley Miller 3-pointer with two of his own, trimming the BV lead down to 37-27 at the intermission.

"We had eight turnovers and we shot in the 40s (for percentage)," Neuendorf said. "We ran our stuff and we had good looks in the first half," he said. "You have to make shots."

The Kernels shot nearly 48 percent in the loss, and scored a season-high 57 points. But ultimately, Neuendorf said, Mitchell didn't make enough shots and gave up too many second-chance points, as the Lynx had 11 offensive rebounds.

Brandon Valley coach Brent Deckert said it wasn't perfect offense or even the gameplan for his team to shoot the 3-point shot like they did Tuesday but he wasn't going to alter his team's path to success.

"When you've got a team shooting like we were, sometimes you just have to let the kids go and shoot it," he said.

It was a season-high for scoring for the Lynx, as well. Evan Talcott drilled five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points. Cade Terveer scored 17 points for BV inside and Carter Olthoff had 11 points for the Lynx, who travel to Brookings on Friday.

For Mitchell, three players reached double figures. Vincent Michael and Carter Cavanaugh each had 11 points, with Johnson adding 10. Kiel Nelson and Miller each had eight points, while Carter Jacobsen scored six.

The Kernels will step out of Eastern South Dakota Conference play for the final time this season on Friday, as Mitchell hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt at the Corn Palace.
