Area basketball roundup: Spartan girls earn first win

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Wessington Springs girls basketball team earned its first win of the season Saturday, topping Colome 52-46.

Wessington Springs (1-4): Cadee Schelske had 19 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Grace Gran scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and made four steals. Chasity Vissia added 10 points for the Spartans, who were able to overcome a 29 percent shooting game. Up next: Wessington Springs hosts Sunshine Bible Academy on Thursday.

Colome (1-2): Rayne Hermsen had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cowgirls, while Abby Kortan scored nine points. Kaydee Heath had eight points and 12 rebounds and Saydee Heath had eight points and nine rebounds for Colome, which had 27 turnovers, was 26 percent on field goal attempts and made 12 of 34 free throws. Up next: Colome visits Avon today.

Miller 58, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 55

HURON — Karst Hunter converted a three-point play with less than 2 seconds remaining Saturday to lift the Rustlers to a win at the Huron Holiday Classic, knocking Sanborn Central/Woonsocket from the ranks of the unbeatens.

Miller (4-1): Steven Fernholz had 14 points and Hunter scored 12 points. Devin Letsche added 10 points and Hunter Russell had nine points and eight rebounds for Miller. Up next: Miller hosts De Smet today.

SCW (4-1): Trey Weber scored a game-high 22 points and hit six 3-pointers for the Blackhawks. Noah Dickson had 17 points and eight rebounds for SCW, which shot 39 percent. Up next: The Blackhawks are at No. 1-ranked Bridgewater-Emery today in Emery.

HURON — A balanced effort for Lyman helped them to a win at the Huron Holiday Classic Saturday at the Huron Arena.

Lyman (2-3): Brenden Estes scored 22 points, while Baptiste Pourier had 15 points in the win. Tate Wagner scored 11 points and Ty Schindler had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders. Up next: The Raiders will head to Colome on Friday.

Hitchcock-Tulare (1-6): Caileb Wanner had 17 points and Zach Binger had 15 points for H-T. Ty Hofer gathered 11 rebounds in the loss. Up next: The Patriots will play in the 281 Conference Tournament on Jan. 13 in Wolsey.

HURON — In a game with 17 lead changes, Haydn Podoll's 3-pointer with 4 seconds left spoiled Ethan's bid for a third straight win Saturday at the Huron Holiday Classic.

Leola/Frederick Area (1-4): Podoll, who scored 10 points, was one of four Titans to score at least 10 points in the win. Trevor Sumption had 14 points and 11 rebounds, with Isaac Sumption adding 12 and Alex Sumption scoring 11 points, helping L/F overcome 21 turnovers. Up next: The Titans will host Waubay/Summit on Saturday in Frederick.

Ethan (2-2): Abiah Plastow had a game-high 28 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and made four steals for Ethan, shooting 12-for-18 in the loss. Derek Storm scored 14 points and Brady Hawkins had 10 rebounds for the Rustlers, who shot 34 percent. Up next: Ethan will battle Avon on Thursday at the Corn Palace.
