The Harrisburg Woodies continued their impressive run at the Class B state amateur tournament on Friday at Cadwell Park.
Harrisburg held Crofton (Neb.) to just three hits and earned a 3-1 win to advance to the semifinals. Harrisburg will play Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. today in semifinals.
On Friday, Dalton Allen had a no-hitter going until the seventh inning when Nick Hegge smacked a triple. Allen tossed eight innings, gave up one run, three hits, struck out six batters and walked no batters. Aaron LaBrie recorded the last three outs to earn the save.
Offensively, the Woodies recorded 12 hits. Ryan Menssen went 3-for-4, while Drew Sweeter, Brody Kunzmann and Drew Andela added two hits apiece. Sweeter and Kunzmann both hit RBI doubles in the fifth inning to put Harrisburg ahead 3-0.
Rand Thygeson drove in a run in the seventh for Crofton, but it could not get another run on the board. Carl Schieffer added a hit for the Bluejays.
Scott Donner was tagged with the loss for the Bluejays. He allowed three runs, 12 hits and struck out three batters in eight innings.Class A recaps
Sioux Falls Brewers 8, Renner 7
The Sioux Falls Brewers edged rival the Renner Monarchs 8-7 at the Class A state amateur baseball tournament on Friday at Cadwell Park.
Renner took a 7-5 lead after putting up two runs in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Ian Strum belted a three-run homer to left field for an 8-7 lead. The score held up as Sioux Falls will play in the state championship game on Sunday at noon at Cadwell Park.
Sam Lang recorded the win for Sioux Falls. He scattered five hits, gave up two earned runs and struck out three batters in four innings of relief.
Tom Hill finished 3-for-4 in the win, while James Borges went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Brewers. Jesse Munsterman had a single and a double. T.J. Miller, Jose Martinez and Nolan Miller all recorded a hit.
For Renner, Eric DeJong hit a three-run double in fifth inning to tie the score at 5-5. In the seventh, Chaz Palmer hit a two-run double to put the Monarchs ahead 7-5.
Tim Huber went 2-for-4 and crushed a solo home run in the first inning.
Renner will play the Aberdeen vs. Vermillion winner at 5:30 p.m. today.
Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar 5, Castlewood Ravens 4
Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar put up four runs in the first inning and hung on for a 5-4 win over the Castlewood Ravens at the Class A state amateur baseball tournament on Friday at Drake Field.
Spencer Sudbeck, Ryan Ellingson and JaColby Anderson all had RBI’s in the first inning, but Aberdeen went scoreless for the next six innings.
Castlewood chopped the deficit to 5-4 after Corey Roach cracked a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
After Aberdeen failed to get an insurance run in the ninth, reliever Jesse Spangler retired the side in the bottom of the frame to secure the win. In the top of the eighth, Zach Rierson hit a sacrifice fly to score Anderson from third base for a 5-2 lead.
Aberdeen’s Chad Ellingson earned the win. He pitched eight innings, scattered eight hits, gave up four earned runs and struck out three batters.
For Castlewood, Carter Roach and Andy Turbak both had two hits.
Aberdeen will play Vermillion at 11 a.m. today at Cadwell Park.
Vermillion Red Sox 14, Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 5
The Vermillion Red Sox rocked the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 14-5 at the Class A state amateur baseball tournament on Friday at Drake Field.
The Red Sox pounded out 18 hits, compared to nine for the Flying Squirrels.
Vermillion’s Tylor Candor belted two home runs, Kendall Hazel and Blake Meechum both smacked homers as well. Hazel drove in four runs, while Meechum and Candor knocked in three runs apiece. Robin Chute and Dan Hanson had three hits in the win.
Hazel earned the win as well. He gave up nine hits, five runs (two earned) and struck out three batters in nine innings.
For Sioux Falls, Reece Mimmack went 3-for-4 and drove in a run. Seth Bjordahl and Seth Peterson had two hits apiece.
Vermillion will play Aberdeen at 11 a.m. today at Cadwell Park.
