Three big innings propelled the Larchwood (Iowa) Diamonds into the semifinals of the State B amateur baseball tournament on Thursday at Cadwell Park.
Larchwood scored four runs in the first inning, added seven in the fifth and three more in the seventh as it eliminated the Irene Cardinals 15-2 in seven innings. Larchwood will now play Garretson at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals of the tournament.
On Thursday, Larchwood’s Koury Kramer and Keaton Grevengoed both knocked in three runs. Grevengoed crushed a three-run homer to left field in the top of the seventh to make it 15-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Irene got the leadoff batter on base, but could not get any runs across.
Kramer went 3-for-5 and hit a two-run double in the first inning to start offensive onslaught.
In the second inning, Irene’s Mason Winterboer hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-2. It would be Irene’s final runs of the game.
In the fifth, the Diamonds erupted for their seven runs to take control. Chase Vander Feen and Travis Feekes both drove in two runs for Larchwood. Vander Feen went 3-for-5 from the plate. Mitch Peschon and Brent Ripperda added two hits.
Ryan Brasser earned the win for Larchwood. He pitched all seven innings, scattered seven hits, struck out 10 batters and gave up two earned runs.
Simon Healy was tagged with the loss for Irene. He surrendered 11 hits, 11 runs (eight earned) and struck out one batters in 4 1/3 innings.
Ryne Lees, Alex Loes, Sam Parkinson, Bryant Knodel, Matt Sees and Adam Gale all had hits for Irene.
