It was deja vu for Winner/Colome on Thursday.
For the second straight season, the Pheasants saw Garretson end their season in the quarterfinals of the Class B South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Cadwell Park.
This year, however, it was Winner/Colome trying to pull off a ninth-inning comeback. The Pheasants scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but left the game-tying run 90-feet away as Derek Fischer and the Blue Jays were able to hold on for a 6-5 win and advance to Saturday's semifinals.
"That game wasn't lost at the end," Winner/Colome manager Kevin Graesser said about the ninth inning. "Garretson is a good team. They took hits away from us with their defense, they pitch and they hit. They beat us. We just had a slow start."
Trailing 6-2 as the ninth inning rolled around, the first five Pheasants found a way to get on base with two reaching via a Blue Jay error. Reed Harter came around to score on a Austin Richey RBI single, while Derek Graesser scored on an error and Richey scored on a Zach Harter fielder's choice to make it a one-run game.
Fischer recorded a big strikeout for the second out and got a ground ball to end the game. The former Brandon Valley standout finished the game allowing five runs (three earned) on 13 hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in nine innings pitched.
"I had confidence in our guys all around. They got a couple hits there and we made some errors, but at the end of the day, we got a victory," said Garretson manager Aaron VanDeBerg, whose team beat Winner/Colome 5-4 in last year's quarterfinals. "All year long we've had great pitching and defense. Fischer is a bulldog and he came out on top."
Jared Donahue took the loss for Winner/Colome, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with 12 strikeouts and eight walks in seven innings pitched. Terrell Bauld pitched a hitless bottom of the eighth inning for the Pheasants.
Garretson (22-3) jumped on Donahue early, scoring three runs in the first inning and added another run the second for an early 4-0 lead.
Winner/Colome, which outhit the Blue Jays 13-8 in the loss, scored its first run in the top of the fifth inning when Geno Katz scored on an RBI single by Reed Harter. The Pheasants had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth inning, but failed to add another run until the top of the seventh inning.
"It was about clawing as hard as we could, but we couldn't produce," Kevin Graesser said. "Anytime you get to this night, you've played some good ball. You play against the best ballplayers in the state and hope you come out on the winning side."
Lakin Neugebauer scored on a Richey RBI single in the seventh, but Garretson responded with two more insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Neugebauer went 3-for-5, while Richey, Austin Calhoon and Derek Graesser had two hits.
For the Blue Jays, Brady Bonte went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Nick Bruning added a hit and an RBI.
