Sunday's state amateur roundup: Garretson advances to quarterfinals

Five added runs in the final three inning provided the needed cushion for the Garretson Blue Jays to advance to the Class B state quarterfinals at the South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament, topping Lake Norden 8-5 Sunday in the second round at Cadwell Park.

Garretson, which had 16 hits in the game, held a 4-2 lead after seven innings before tacking on two more runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. Lake Norden countered with three runs in the bottom of the ninth but was sunk by five errors in the game.

Dustin Steckler, Austin Vanhove and Mike Stephenson each had three hits and Brett Fischer knocked in three RBIs in the game. Nick Bruning scored twice in the game. Nick Bonte earned the win, throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing four hits, two unearned runs and striking out seven. Derek Fischer and Dustin Steckler covered the final seven outs in the game, allowing a combined two hits, three runs (one earned) and striking out five.

For the Lakers, Tony Campbell and Chad Selchert each had two hits and Austin Gilbertson scored twice. Matt Stevenson took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing nine hits and two earned runs.

Garretson will play Winner/Colome in the Class B tournament's first quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Cadwell Park.

Four Corners 12, Castlewood Monarchs 1 (7 inn.)

Four Corners scored five times in the fourth inning and four times in the fifth inning, cruising to a 12-1, seven-inning win over the Castlewood Monarchs Sunday in the final first-round game of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament at Cadwell Park.

Brad Hand was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, while Adam Kaus knocked in two runs on two hits and scored three times. Andrew McCloud and Cooper Carter each had doubles, as Four Corners had 11 hits. J.D. Farley pitched the entire shortened game, allowing eight hits, one earned run and striking out six.

For the Monarchs, Brody Grantham had two of Castlewood's eight hits and Adam Ching drove in the only run. Jacob Tvedt took the loss, tossing four innings, allowing five hits and six runs (one earned).

Four Corners (17-8) will face Madison in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Madison 3, Lesterville 0

Brock Selgestad and Brady Banse combined for a seven-hit shutout for the Madison Broncos, who blanked Lesterville 3-0 in a first-round game Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Matt Burpee had two hits of the Broncos' six hits and drove in a run. Selgestad threw six innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven. Banse earned the three-inning save, allowing two hits.

Zach Johnson had two hits of the seven hits for Lesterville, which left 10 men on base. Alex Wagner threw all eight innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) with six walks and 10 strikeouts.

Madison (15-6) will play Four Corners in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
