Fueled by a big five-run top of the sixth inning, the Irene Cardinals blew past the Northville Merchants 13-5 in an opening round game at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Friday at Cadwell Park.

Ryne Lees went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while pick-up player Dylan Lehr, of Menno, sparked the offense with two hits, including a triple, three stolen bases and four runs scored. Alex Loes added two doubles and one single with two RBIs, while Simon Healy and George Sees each added two hits for the Cardinals, who finished the game with 13 hits.

On the mound, Loes earned the win, allowing two earned run on six hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3 and 2/3 innings pitched. Healy tossed the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

For Northville, Ryan Hoffman went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Eric Peterson added three hits, including a double and two RBIs. Gregg Heyne and Tyson Paulson each had two hits.

Peterson took the loss, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Irene (11-9) plays Mount Vernon in the second round at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, while Northville's season ends at 7-6.
