Last year's runner-up Garretson escaped a first-round scare by the Wynot (Neb.) Expos and held on for 5-4 win on Thursday at Cadwell Park.

Former Dakota Wesleyan University pitcher Patrick Whetham earned the win, giving up four earned runs on 13 hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in nine innings pitched.

Zach Lukes had a triple and two RBIs, while Brady Bonte added an RBI.
