Vermillion’s Tanner Anderson and Jayce Huska each had four hits and the Greysox banged out 19 hits as a team, as the Greysox earned an 11-7 first-round victory over Clark in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament early Thursday at Cadwell Park.
Anderson drove in three runs and scored four times, with Huska and Tyler Johnson each driving in two, as Vermillion scored in each of the first six innings. Johnson and Jon Merrigan each had three hits and Steve Fejfar had two hits in the game. Alex Mogensen earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned) and struck out seven. Cole Anderson threw the final two innings, allowing three hits and three runs.
For Clark, Lane Hovde and Rhett Florey each had three hits, while Florey and Kyle Braun each scored twice. Zach Toben took the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in the first two innings. Andrew Wegner threw the rest of the game for the Traders, allowing 12 hits, seven runs (five earned) and six strikeouts.
The game, which had 30 combined hits, ended shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday morning, as the start time was delayed by a two-hour rain delay prior to the first game of the session between Winner/Colome and Dell Rapids PBR.
Vermillion will play Winner/Colome in the second round of the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Cadwell Park.
