Mitchell High School football head coach Kent VanOverschelde was named the South Dakota High School Coaches Association football coach of the year Tuesday.

It was announced on Tuesday at the SDHSCA Hall of Fame and Awards banquet as part of the South Dakota Coaches' Clinic at the Highland Conference Center in Mitchell.

VanOverschelde helped MHS to a record year, guiding the Kernels to an 11-1 record in his 10th season as the head coach. The team defeated Harrisburg 41-6 in the Class 11AA state title game, which was the school's first football title in the playoff era. He has a 46-55 coaching record while at Mitchell.
