Devan Reilly took advantage of his draw and cashed in during the final night of the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.
The Sheridan, Wyoming, bareback rider scored an 83.50 on Sunday. Reilly finished second in the bareback riding at the four-night rodeo with his ride, pocketing $1,409.62. Gavin DeRose took first with an 85 on Friday and netted $1,838.64.
Reilly drew the Sutton Rodeo Company horse Knobs, which is an offspring of Chuckulator -- top saddle bronc horse of the 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
"For me to ride one of his offspring is pretty awesome," Reilly said. "That horse is a stud."
Reilly's friend and competitor Jamie Hewlett drew the same horse at the Sitting Bull Stampede Rodeo in Mobridge. He scored a 78 on the horse and Reilly was impressed when watching the bareback horse on video.
"You could tell that horse really wanted to buck," Reilly said. "He looked good on paper. He is a really good horse."
Reilly said his season has "been a little rocky," but hopes Sunday's ride will boost his confidence and his place in the standings.
"It definitely helps with the standings and it also helps with confidence and paying bills," Reilly said. "I know everybody thinks rodeo cowboys are just gypsies, but we still have bills. So it's nice to pay those."
Hereford's J.J. Elshere, a four-time WNFR qualifier, had the high-point ride of the night in the saddle bronc riding. After taking a re-ride option, Elshere scored an 80.50 on his second bronc.
"It was just a young horse they haven’t bucked a lot," Elshere said. "It's just the same as all of them, you just try your best."
Elshere has been at his best as of late. He recently moved from 18th to 12th in the world standings ($56,690) after netting $10,000 for winning the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"I feel good," he said. "I feel healthy and I have been drawing good. When you draw good, it helps you ride all right, but I am pretty blessed."
The Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo won't net him a significant amount of money ($373.93), but every little bit counts as he's gunning for a top-15 finish and another WNFR appearance.
Up next, he'll head to rodeos in Utah, Wyoming and Deadwood as his rodeo grind continues. But enjoyed his stop in Mitchell for the Sunday performance.
"They get some phenomenal horses put together here and there's a pretty good crowd here," Elshere said. "It always has been. It's close to home. There's a lot of ups to this one."
Rapid City's Chet Smith won the saddle bronc riding with an 83 on Saturday. He took home $2,492.88 for the ride.
