The Special Olympics of South Dakota selected Dakota Wesleyan University and the Mitchell community as the recipients of the 2019 Don Baker Award.

The award, given in honor of longtime Special Olympics volunteer and official Don Baker, is annually given to an individual, organization, business or agency that has given outstanding support to the Special Olympics of South Dakota.

During the last two years, DWU and Mitchell hosted the State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament, breaking the record for most teams and participants both years. This year, DWU hosted 80 teams and 12 cheerleading teams, amassing more than 900 athletes.

Every DWU athletic team and coach helped officiate, keep scorebooks, operate scoreboards, hand out medals and judging cheerleading events.

The school also played host to the last two polar plunges, along with the state softball and bocce ball tournaments.

The award will be officially presented at the Special Olympics of South Dakota Banquet and Awards Presentation on Nov. 9 in Aberdeen.
