Area volleyball roundup: Mitchell Christian falls to SC/W

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket handed Mitchell Christian its first loss of the season Thursday night in high school volleyball, as the Blackhawks won the contest in four sets at Mitchell Christian.

Set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-21.

Myah Selland had a double-double effort for the Blackhawks, delivering 15 kills and 16 digs in the win. Tayla Weber added eight kills and 11 digs. Bailey Moody facilitated the Blackhawks' attack with 21 assists.

For the Golden Eagles, Abbie Reynen had 13 kills and 12 digs, along with three aces. Emily Reynen had 13 kills and 10 digs and Kelsey Thompson had 30 assists to go with her six digs. Taylor Lepke hammered three aces and seven digs.

The Blackhawks took the junior varsity contest, 25-9 and 27-25.

SC/W (4-3) and Mitchell Christian (3-1) will both be at Saturday's Custer Battlefield Highway conference tournament in Plankinton.

Avon 3, Centerville 0

AVON—Hanna Powers had 13 assists, three digs and a kill in Avon's 3-0 win over Centerville on Thursday in Centerville.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-19 and 25-22.

Karisa Markel had 12 digs, while Cheylee Nagel had eight kills and five digs in the win.

For Centerville, Makenzie Olson had 14 digs, four assists and three kills in the loss.

Avon (2-3) takes on Wagner on Tuesday in Avon, while Centerville (2-4) plays Baltic on Tuesday in Centerville.

Wagner 3, Gregory 0

WAGNER—Ali Kuca's five aces and 21 digs led Wagner to a 3-0 victory over Gregory on Thursday in Wagner.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 25-14.

For the Red Raiders, Emily Brunsing 10 kills and two blocks, Rachel Dion had 19 digs, Faith Tyler had 15 assists and Sierra Juffer had 12 assists.

For Gregory, Maddie Eklund had 11 digs and Ivy Ekroth had four kills.

Wagner (6-1) takes on Avon on Tuesday in Avon, while Gregory (2-6) plays in the Cavalier Clash on Sept. 19 in Tyndall.

Freeman Academy 3, Hendricks (Minn.) 0

HENDRICKS, Minn.—The Freeman Academy volleyball team remained perfect on the season by defeating Hendricks (Minn.) 3-0 on Thursday in Hendricks, Minn.

Set scores were 25-7, 25-18 and 25-9. No other stats were available.

Freeman Academy (6-0) plays Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Saturday in Freeman.

Gayville-Volin 3, Freeman 0

FREEMAN — Gayville-Volin stayed undefeated on Thursday night, as the Raiders picked up a road victory at Freeman in high school volleyball.

Set scores were 25-8, 25-11 and 25-14.

The Raiders (5-0) were led by Viola Ishmaal who was a perfect 24-for-24 on serves and had 10 digs. Megan Hirsch had four blocks and 11 kills and Genevieve Clark had a game-high 12 kills.

For Freeman, Ashley Glanzer had three kills. Josie Fuhrman and Glanzer paced the Flyers in digs with 10 each.

Freeman (0-6) is at Scotland to face the Highlanders on Monday.

Ethan 3, Menno 1

MENNO — Behind 13 kills and eight aces from Rachel Hawkins, the Ethan Rustlers picked up a four-set road win at Menno Thursday night in high school volleyball.

Set scores were 25-10, 19-25, 25-12 and 25-15.

Karly Gustafson had eight kills and five digs for Ethan, while Janae Gustafson had six kills and three digs. Ellie Hohn was key at the service line for the Rustlers, with five aces.

For Menno, Paige Heckenlaible had five kills and two blocks, leading both categories for the Wolves. Tara Spencer had 15 digs and Hailey Fergen and Ashton Vaith each had six assists.

Ethan (3-2) is at Custer Battlefield Highway Conference Tournament on Saturday in Plankinton, which starts at 1:30 p.m. Menno (2-2) hosts Howard on Monday.

Bon Homme 3, Platte-Geddes 0

TYNDALL—Alie Adams had 26 assists while helping Bon Homme to a 3-0 victory over Platte-Geddes on Thursday in Tyndall.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20.

Jeni Schmidt had nine kills for Bon Homme, while Morgan Rothschadl had 20 digs in the win.

For Platte-Geddes, Jenna Erickson had 15 assists, Hallie Hallock had six kills and seven digs and Jada Nelson had seven digs in the loss.

Bon Homme (5-0) takes on Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Tuesday in Tripp, while Platte-Geddes (4-3) plays Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Monday in Platte.

Kimball/White Lake 3, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 0

KIMBALL—Brooklyn Donald and Lindsay Olson racked up 10 and eight kills, respectively, in Kimball/White Lake's sweep of Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday in Kimball.

Set scores were 25-8, 25-13 and 25-10.

Cassie Natvig paced the Kimball/White Lake offense with 12 assists. Ashley Surat added 10 assists in the win.

Natvig also lead the team in digs with 12, while Brenna Blasius had 10.

For Tripp-Delmont/Armour, Kelsey Buchmann led with 17 kills, with Brianna Stoebner added 11.

On defense, Erica Koster and Jeana Nuss each had nine digs.

Kimball/White Lake (3-1) will compete in the Custer Battlefield Highway conference tournament on Saturday in Plankinton. Tripp-Delmont/Armour (0-4) will play Bon Homme on Tuesday in Tripp.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian 3, Sunshine Bible Academy 0

NEW HOLLAND — Andes Central/Dakota Christian upped its record to 5-2 on the season with a three set win over Sunshine Bible Academy Thursday night in high school volleyball.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-12 and 25-21

Abbi Baan Hoffman recorded 12 kills and three blocks for the Thunder and Kennedy Muckey followed her teammate with 11 kills and 16 digs. Lydia Hansum had 19 set assists and Shaylin Stotz had five aces while serving.

For Sunshine Bible, Sarah Pedersen had eight kills and three aces. Sierra Young contributed with 11 digs.

AC/DC won the junior varsity and C-squad matches in two sets each.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian is at Platte-Geddes on Monday night for a match in Platte.

Scotland 3, Marion 1

MARION—Alex Conrad had 14 assists and four kills in Scotland's 3-1 win over Marion on Thursday in Marion.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-22.

Taylor Bietz had eight kills and 11 assists for Scotland, while Alexis DeBoer had 10 kills and seven digs.

For Marion, Renae Kayser had 25 digs and Amy Ptak had 12 assists and nine digs in the loss.

Scotland (2-3) takes on Freeman on Monday in Scotland, while Marion (0-4) takes on Colman-Egan on Tuesday in Marion.

Mount Vernon Plankinton 3, Hanson 1

PLANKINTON—Makaela Karst's double-double with 17 kills and 26 digs led Mount Vernon/Plankinton over Hanson 3-1 on Thursday in Plankinton.

Set scores were 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23.

For MV/P, Mikayla Weiss had two aces and 29 assists, Megan Bultsma had 14 kills and nine blocks and Payleen O'Day had 42 digs.

For Hanson, Kynedi Cheeseman had 26 kills and 37 digs, Tayah Waldera had three aces and 24 assists and Hannah Marquardt had 40 digs.

MV/P (4-0) will play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the Custer Battlefield Highway conference tournament on Saturday in Plankinton, while Hanson (5-2) plays Canistota on Tuesday in Alexandria.

Lyman 3, New Underwood 0

NEW UNDERWOOD—Shelby Schindler's 10 kills led Lyman to a 3-0 victory over New Underwood on Thursday in New Underwood.

Set scores were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-14.

For Lyman, Brooklyn Halverson had seven kills, seven aces and one block, Hanna Thiry had 13 assists and three digs, Carly Uthe had seven assists and five digs and Sarah Herman had 14 digs and three aces.

Lyman (5-3) takes on Harding County on Saturday in Philip.

Burke/South Central 3, O'Neill St. Mary's (Neb.) 0

BONESTEEL — Burke/South Central had no problems with visiting O'Neill St. Mary's Thursday night, defeating the Cardinals in three sets.

Set scores were 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11.

Allison Sebern led the Cougars with four kills and five blocks, while Madison Wischmann set the offense up with nine digs. Teah Serr had six digs

The Cougars (5-3) will be across the Nebraska border for their next matches on Thursday, playing Boyd County and Stuart during a triangular in Spencer, Neb.

McCook Central/Montrose 3, Howard 1

HOWARD—McCook Central/Montrose earned a 3-1 victory over Howard in the first round of the Big East Conference volleyball tournament on Thursday in Howard.

Set scores were 25-10, 28-30, 25-13, 25-10.

Morgan Koepsell had a match-high nine kills, while Danielle Hansen added seven kills in the win.

Morgan Sechser had seven digs, while Nicole Bies added 26 assists and seven digs.

Howard's Citori Rentz had eight kills and seven digs, while Izzy Becker added seven in the loss.

McCook Central advanced to play Chester in the semifinals, while Howard played Flandreau in the consolation semifinals.

Flandreau 3, Howard 2

HOWARD — Flandreau pulled out a close match in the consolation semifinal of the Big East Conference volleyball tournament Thursday night in Howard, defeating the host Tigers in five sets.

Set scores were 14-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13

For Howard, Izzy Becker and Citori Rentz each had 10 kills, while Martina Albrecht had eight kills. Rentz added 11 digs and Katelyn Kampshoff had 27 set assists for the Tigers.

Howard (2-6) continues in the Big East Conference tournament on Saturday in Flandreau.

Chester Area 3, McCook Central Montrose 0

HOWARD—Chester Area swept McCook Central 3-0 in the semifinals of the Big East Conference volleyball tournament on Thursday in Howard.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.

Chester Area, ranked No. 3 in Class B, were led by Jenna Reiff, who had 28 kills and five blocks, while Sam Ordal added 14 kills in the win.

MCM was led by Morgan Koepsell's 22 kills, while Nicole Bies recorded 41 assists and three aces.

MCM (3-7) continues play in the Big East Conference tournament on Saturday in Flandreau.

Irene-Wakonda 3, Bridgewater-Emery 1

WAKONDA—Irene-Wakonda downed Bridgewater-Emery 3-1 in a high school volleyball match on Thursday in Wakonda.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 25-15.

For the Huskies, Autumn Hilton had nine kills, three ace serves and four blocks. Hannah Harberts had 10 assists and eight digs, with Sydney Hoffman had five kills and three blocks. Joslyn Schrank delivered 19 digs.

Bridgewater-Emery (1-4) hosts Freeman on Tuesday in Emery.

Colome 3, Jones County 0

MURDO—Colome beat Jones County 3-0 in a high school volleyball match on Thursday in Murdo.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.

No stats were provided despite attempts to reach coaches.

Colome (6-1) plays Marty Indian on Monday in Marty.
