Mitchell native and current South Dakota State University pitcher Trever Vermeulen has been named to a pair of preseason All-America teams, it was announced recently.

Vermeulen, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior for the Jackrabbits, is part of the 2011 Proline Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association Preseason All-America Second Team. He also was announced as a member of the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America Third Team.

A first-team all-Summit League selection in 2010, Vermeulen led the league with school records of 10 saves and 35 appearances. He finished his junior campaign with a 9-1 record and 62 strikeouts in 68.1 innings. He also posted a league-leading 1.45 earned run average.

SDSU is scheduled to open its season Feb. 25-27 with three games at the University of Texas-Arlington Tournament.

Former Hanson standout Megan Doyle had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in the Augustana College women's basketball team's 63-60 loss to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Dec. 18 in Moorhead, Minn.

Doyle was 4-for-13 shooting and 1 of 5 from 3-point range in 36 minutes of action.

Doyle is a 5-8 senior guard who has started all 13 games for the Vikings this season. She leads the team at 16.0 points per game and averages 4.8 rebounds per contest. She also leads the team with 32 steals and is second with 57 assists.

Augustana is 11-2 overall and 4-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The Vikings host St. Cloud State (Minn.) at 4 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Mitchell native Jordan Miller and the Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team has lost its past two games courtesy of buzzer-beating 3-pointers.

Miller had 15 points and six assists in a 68-66 loss to Winona State University (Minn.) on Dec. 17. Winona State's Anthony Tucker hit a shot just inside half court as time expired to win the game.

The next day, Miller had 15 points and four assists in a 75-74 loss to Upper Iowa University. Upper Iowa's Dan Bestul hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to hand the Mustangs their fourth straight loss. SMSU has lost its past four games by a combined six points.

Miller, a 6-5 sophomore guard, leads the team with 16.0 points per game and also averages 4.9 rebounds per contest.

The Mustangs are 5-5 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. They face the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday in Marshall, Minn.
