The 85-year-old pope is making the week-long apology tour of Canada to fulfill a promise he made to Indigenous delegations that visited him this year at the Vatican, where he made the initial apology.
The first full day of his Canadian tour will be dedicated to indigenous peoples and the apology, with a Mass to be held in Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Tuesday.
The July 24-30 trip will include at least five encounters with native people as Francis makes good on a promise to apologize on their home territory for the Church's role in the state-sanctioned schools, which sought to erase indigenous cultures.
