It is the season of sports. Basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, hockey, along with many other activities, are in full swing at Mitchell High School. Most students are in the busiest part of their year with practices, games, and their studies all in high demand. However, this does not deter many students from participating in intramural sports.

Intramural sports are recreational activities played by teams within the same school. This year at MHS, there are three intramural sports for students to be involved in. The student organization HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) sponsored intramural dodgeball and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) sponsors both intramural basketball and volleyball.

Intramural sporting events are organized by the FBLA or HOSA officers and run by their members. An MHS teacher is present at each event to chaperone or officiate.

"For intramural basketball, some FBLA members are participating in the games and, therefore, are able to help provide further officiating [or] advice," said FBLA officer Alexis Elfstrand.

The intramural basketball season at MHS is underway. There are four teams comprised of five to 10 players vying for the intramural title. Each team plays each other twice before the final championship game, which will be held Monday.

There is an obvious appeal to intramural sport that draws students to participate in them even when swamped with school and competitive sports.

"(Intramurals) are an opportunity to play sports just for fun. Nobody takes it too seriously, making for an awesome time," senior Micah Moen said.

Nick Hansen, an intramural basketball team captain, said, "Intramural sports are special because you can play with anyone with any skill level. [I'm] able to play with my friends."
