To the Editor:
The South Dakota State Fire School was held in Mitchell on June 6-8 on the Mitchell Technical Institute campus for the third straight year, with roughly 380 volunteer firefighters and almost 500 total attendees in town for the weekend.
On behalf of the South Dakota Firefighters Association, I cannot say enough on how much the planning committee appreciates the assistance and work by MTI, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, volunteers from James Valley Community Center, Sports and Events Authority, Mitchell Fire Department, and all the businesses that provided items for fire school. The use of the Dakotafest property, once again, provided an excellent opportunity for rope rescue training from the top of a grain bin.
We were fortunate enough to have the Main Street First Friday events for our attendees to enjoy, as well as, the Carnegie Resource Center's firefighters displays. It all came together so well.
The local media folks at KORN and the Daily Republic provided outstanding media coverage of our events. And the city maintenance department providing us assistance with the parking lot cleanup - after chopping up 12 cars over the weekend - was truly appreciated.
The SDFA board hopes we can include more businesses, organizations, and events to utilize even more of what Mitchell has to offer.
On behalf of the South Dakota Firefighters Association Board of Directors, Firefighters Auxiliary, and the firefighters attending State Fire School 2019, thank you Mitchell, and we are looking forward to our returning in June 2020, 2021, and 2022.
