To the Editor:
Thank you for your editorial in support of the free press. I was born and raised in Mitchell. I have moved literally from coast to coast since leaving South Dakota for university and am proud to call Mitchell my home town.
There is no question that a free press is essential to the function of a working democracy. Our ability to disagree openly and without fear is one of the things that has always made America great and we cannot allow that freedom to be infringed.
State control or suppression of the press is, in my opinion, a first step toward the loss of that freedom. No president, from any party or ideology, can ever be allowed to muffle the voices of criticism (or praise) whether or not we individually agree with those views.
Keep up the good work.
