To the Editor:

Soon there will be an election to determine who will serve as the retiree representative on the Board of Trustees of the South Dakota Retirement System. I urge my fellow SDRS retirees to vote for Dr. Lowell Slyter to be that representative.

I was the Executive Director of SDRS from inception in 1974 until 2003. During my tenure as Executive Director, no board member made a more positive contribution to the success of SDRS that Dr. Slyter did when he previously served on the Board from 1985 to 2004.

At the December 7, 2016 meeting SDRS Board of Trustees, a motion was made and passed that will decrease the value of the Improvement Factor of COLA, which is in place to protect retirees from the loss of purchasing power after retirement due to increases in the cost of living caused by inflation. This proposal was enacted into law by the 2017 Legislature and goes into effect on July 1. The Board member who made the motion to make this change was the present retiree representative.

Please cast your vote for D. Slyter. He's the best candidate to support the interests of the 26,400 SDRS retirees.
