To the Editor:

The hypocrisy of Senate Republicans regarding the management of recent Supreme Court nominations is nothing short of astonishing. When they were faced with a nomination from President Obama (Merrick Garland) they thumbed their nose at their Constitutional responsibilities and refused even to meet with the nominee for nearly a year. Their justification - a truly novel explanation, one that had never before been raised - was that we should wait until after the upcoming election and take into account the "will of the people."

Now we are confronted with a similar situation - a new nomination to the Supreme Court with an election less than two months away. So, are Republican leaders delaying the confirmation until after the election to learn "the will of the people?" No way. They are pulling out all the stops to rush this confirmation through as rapidly as possible even though serious questions have been raised about the fitness of the nominee.

Could it be they are fearful of what message might actually come from the "will of the people?"

Once again, the hypocrisy is stunning.
