To the Editor:
I feel I just need to respond to two letters in the March 3 edition of The Daily Republic.
• Richard Peterson, Wewela. So many words, no facts. The NRA is one of the strongest proponents of keeping guns out of the hands of persons who pose a threat to society. It has done more to help people train to protect themselves than any other organization in the country. Their emphasis on gun safety is fantastic and begins with children. It is entirely non-political and non-racial.
• John Zilverberg, Aberdeen. Automatic weapons are already banned from unlicensed persons, and if you are referring to "bump stocks," they should have been regulated the same as any other weapon alteration which makes a semi-automatic act as an automatic. There were at least 20 reasons Nicolas Cruz should not have had access to a gun. In every case the government agency which is sworn to protect the public failed. The Supreme Court has said, "It is the responsibility of the police to protect society (at which they failed); but the responsibility of the individual to protect themselves."
