To the Editor:

The letters from Ms. Muirhead and Rev. Rosinski regarding Planned Parenthood on Feb. 4 represent sincere and obviously deeply held opinions. I respect their concern and their passion. I fear, however, that they misunderstand - and misrepresent - the role that Planned Parenthood actually plays. In fact abortion services are a very small part of services that the organization delivers - less than 5 percent of their budget.

On the contrary, the contraception services they provide (which, in spite of all the unscientific charges, are not abortions) allow women to avoid unintended pregnancies. Objective, nationwide evidence has shown that the contraceptive coverage through the ACA (Obamacare) and the services of Planned Parenthood have led to a dramatic drop in unintended pregnancies. That leads to fewer abortions. That is a good thing.
