To the Editor:

Greetings, this is Trooper Podzimek with the South Dakota Highway Patrol. If you happen to be one of the thousands of people traveling to visit family and friends this busy holiday season, law enforcement is reminding drivers to click it when you get behind the wheel, and don't drink and drive.

Whether you're traveling far or staying closer to home, wearing your seat belt is one of the best defenses to prevent injuries or even death in a crash.

Impaired driving is one of America's most frequent and deadliest crimes. Last year, 42 people were killed on South Dakota highways because of impaired driving, and more than 8,500 arrests were made for DUI. The deadly risks and costly consequences of driving while impaired are far too serious.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will be out in full force over the holidays. Please be responsible, find a designated driver and wear your seat belt; it costs nothing. But the cost for not wearing one certainly will. Don't risk your life, or get a ticket. Please remember to make good decisions and buckle up every trip, every time.
